Globalization Forum 2005 in Mie
"Stability and Sustained Growth in the International Community"
Cosponsored by IISE and the Gorbachev Foundation, Globalization Forum 2005
in Mie was held at the Mie Prefectural Sun Arena. Under the topic ‘Stability
and Sustained Growth in the International Community’, this year’s
forum covered a wide range of issues, including the post-Iraq war turmoil in
the Middle East, the rise of terrorism, poverty, and environmental destruction.
Developments such as East Asian regional unity, the issue of whether security
can be guaranteed, and the rise of the so-called ‘BRICs’ (Brazil,
Russia, India and China) are creating major changes in the global paradigms that
shape Japan’s international relations. To ensure stability and sustained
growth in the international community, Japan needs to respond to these changes
at both the national and local levels. In addition to the national responses
needed, the discussion also examined the broader issue of local responses driven
by the historical and cultural features of each region.
